There is no doubt that the Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton, was a huge clown. So, when the Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee came around, maybe it was time to try something new. The Third Doctor was a little more serious than his predecessor, but that didn’t make him any less amazing. And no matter how “straight” you tell me that Jon Pertwee played his Doctor, I will argue in hell that he didn’t miss a single chance to add in a silly voice, gesture, costume, joke, or charm into his acting. This is because, in real life, Jon was more of a clown. To be honest, the Doctor was pretty much the first role he played more seriously. (Well, except for when he had to be a Greek wind in a school play, but we won’t even get into that.) I think what made the Third Doctor so brilliant is the fact that he was serious, charming, adventurous, and silly at the same time. This makes for a very interesting character. So, for this March, I am honoring the Third Doctor played by Jon Pertwee, my favorite Doctor.
The Third Doctor is widely known as being the James Bond kind of guy. Notice how I haven’t even mentioned that in the paragraph above. This is because, even though I greatly enjoyed the Doctor kicking a** in his episodes, I think that Jon would be just slightly sad if that was all that anyone remembered him by. Whenever I read an article, paper, or book with the Third Doctor in it, all I ever hear is “James Bond” and “Dandy”. His Doctor was so much more than that. From his frilly shirts and velvet suits to his British lisp, the Third Doctor was not only a Venusian aikido dandy-man; he was also very caring, and I found him extremely hilarious and childish at times. These are all characteristics that the Doctor should have (in my opinion anyhow).
One of my favorite episodes, The Green Death, almost had me crying; Jon was such a good actor in this episode especially. At the end (Spoiler Alert), he finds out that Jo is getting married and will no longer be travelling with the Doctor. He is happy for her, of course, but it is so sad when he leaves the party in Bessie, all alone. It was just the perfect ending for a companion. And then, Sarah Jane came along, of course. She and Jon made an excellent pair. Also, we mustn’t forget the amazing Elizabeth Shaw, either. One thing that helps make a good Doctor is a good companion. The Third Doctor made an excellent team, and I will always remember them for as long as I live. I just wish I could thank Jon, Caroline, Katie, and Elizabeth for the wonderful memories.
Well, I got this done really late. Oh well. So, here is the tribute to my favorite Doctor, the Third Doctor! I tried to include the companions a little more this time around. Hope you all like it!
