Well, today was a day in honor of those who are bullied because they are bisexual, gay, lesbian, transsexual, etcetera. To honor this day, several of the people in our class went the whole day without talking, or at least made a valiant effort to. This was to echo the silence of those who are silent because of bullying. So, I was doing well, I had not spoken most of the day (I spoke before I found out that people were doing this), and everyone who made the commitment remained silent. In our Religion class, we were reading aloud from the book, and my teacher called on me to read. Respectfully, I stood up and handed her the paper that told her that I was not speaking that day, but she told me to sit down and read. I was only able to resist for another few seconds before she yelled at me and I had the terrible feeling that she was going to give me a detention, so I sat down and read. I still wish I had stood up to that (insert a not-so-nice word here) and gotten the detention, personally, but I just sat down and read. After class, I was a little surprised that the other students were congratulating me for standing up for myself, and it gave me a little hope that not everyone is so like my teacher in that way. But, boy, that got me and my friend, who was staying silent along with me, mad. A couple of students said that I should complain to the principle, but do I really want to take it that far? I could, but what good would that do? I do feel that I have a right to remain silent, especially in honor of something that I find extremely important. What should I do???
